Formal Fridays

I know this may be a controversial opinion, and may really challenge some people’s long-held beliefs, but I’m a brave young woman, and I’m going to put it out there anyhow. I think in place of Dress-down Fridays, Fancy Fridays should be a thing. This revelation comes moments after I opened my home wardrobe and discovered that I have enough fancy clothes to possibly last me a lifetime. Dresses, funky suits, skirts - you name it and I probably have several of it in different patterns and styles. The situation is so dire that I may have to begin doing the washing up, maybe even the dog walk, in these fancy frocks. Some of them have never been worn, some only worn once, and they are really rather lovely - so the world deserves to see them. Hence my desire to install Formal Fridays - a day of the week on which no one would bat an eyelid if they saw me hitting the library or the office in my heels and haute couture* (I must confess I own no haute couture currently - one day, perhaps, but for now I am a woman with an eye for bargains).

Luckily Cambridge has May Week which is essentially an extended period of Formal Fridays, but it is not enough my friends, I fear I am too well-catered even for Cambridge when it comes to fancy-wear (and that really is saying something). And yet, I have the opposite problem of too few clothes when it comes to practicality. I struggle to buy t-shirts, and loathe spending my good money on ‘essentials’ - I see nothing essential about them, they are only as essential as my ball-gown! Hence why I really need to make these ball gowns pay their way. So next time you invite me over for a ‘chilled night in’, or suggest the cinema, or a pub trip, please don’t be surprised if I don my suit and tie* (another disclaimer - I do not usually pair my funky suits with ties. That might be pushing it too far, even for me). Alternatively, if anyone has any upcoming balls, soirees or generally fancy events - count me in? Can provide costumes for all!
